Synopsis

Yumi arrives at Tojo Ramen, having decided to eat there because her mother wouldn't stop talking about it and she hasn't visited it in a long time. Once she enters, she notices how there are no other customers, and Tsuneyo, after trying and failing to make her feel welcomed, explains that spring is the worst season for ramen since it's neither warm nor cold enough for anyone to eat them regularly. She still promises to make her a satisfying dish and listen to her problems, but when Yumi states she wants to enjoy a quiet meal, Tsuneyo says that her heart will talk about her problems regardless of what her head wants.

Tsuneyo serves Yumi's order while an unknown narrator notes that this is Tsuneyo's primary skill. She has other interests she indulges, like birds, but her world was a small one until she left the shop and explored the wast world outside of it, but she will always return to make sure her home is doing well. She ends up making bird noises, and when Yumi points out her weirdness, she claims it's due to a gas leak caused by the poor state of the building, with Yumi believing it because the place smells weird.

Tsuneyo once again tries to make Yumi open up about her problems, but Yumi doesn't want to since they had no real interactions since their rivalry during the Beach War. Tsuneyo points out how she taught her humility by defeating her, only for Yumi to deny it and claim that she only lost due to Wakana helping them, and Tsuneyo uses a comment about finches to talk about parenthood, having determined that this is Yumi's biggest problem. Yumi tries to get out of that conversation, but due to Tsuneyo's insistence and her mentioning an uncomfortable fact about Sensei, she caves in even though she has no idea where to start and still is hesitant because she doesn't trust Tsuneyo enough to open up to her, even when she promises that everything she says will be forgotten the moment she leaves.

Since Tsuneyo is used to people opening up to her, Yumi uses fighting terms to explain that she doesn't want to let her guard down out of fear of her vulnerability being used against her, but Tsuneyo points out that there are times where their "armor" must come off. Yumi kinda sees her point, but still doesn't want to talk about her backstory due to her knowing Tsuneyo enough to be familiar with her but not good enough to make any assumptions about their respective backstories, something she learned the hard way. She learns about Tsuneyo's past including her close bond with her father until he became bedridden, and confesses Tsuneyo had a better relationship with her father than she had with her own, though refuses to go into details.

Accepting her wish and the fact that this might be her only visit, Tsuneyo wants to ask her a few questions regarding the date December 28, 2020.
