'Rin might look like the cool, calm, and collected type, but she has proven to be a bit unpredictable and far too excitable more times than I can count. She goes through short periods of time where she doesn’t act like herself and has disappeared for days on several occasions. She’s hesitant to come to me for counseling and seems like the type to ignore her problems rather than make a genuine effort to resolve them. That aside, she's universally liked by everyone in the class and has never been known to cause problems for anyone other than herself.'
— Sensei's notes

Rin Rokuhara is part of the Main Cast of in Lessons In Love. She is part of the original ten girls in Sensei's class. She lives in Room 4 with Futaba Fukuyama.

Background

Rin is the biological daughter of two unnamed people. She knows little about her biological parents, aside from the obvious fact they didn't want a kid. She grew up in an orphanage until eventually being adopted by Rika Rokuhara and her wife, Rie Rokuhara. According to Rin, despite the obvious difference of her being adopted, her family was normal and her mothers worked hard to be attentive and as caring as they could, even noticing the signs of her depression before she did.

During elementary, she'd met Futaba, sparking a lifelong friendship, and during middle school, she'd meet Nodoka, Yumi, and started crushing on Chika. It was around this time that the first signs of her bipolar disorder would start to surface, although she initially kept the issue to herself before confiding in Futaba about it. She eventually enrolled in Kumon-Mi High and was put into Sensei's class.

She's a part of the Manga Club, along with Futaba, Ami Arakawa, Maya Makinami, and Molly MacCormack.

Characteristics

Rin is excitable and generally friendly to all the girls in the class, easily making conversation with almost anyone. It's this friendly personality that allowed her to make friends with people as different as Futaba, Sensei, Otoha, Sana, Chika and Ami. She cares deeply for her friends and desperately works to prove this devotion by trying to divide her time between them equally, to varying results. She also loves music and is a hobby guitarist, though Sensei never witnesses her playing. This love of music and girls is what initially draws her to Otoha and was one reason for her resignation from the manga club to join the Light Music Club.

Underneath this exterior is an anxious, emotional girl. Suffering her whole life from bipolar disorder, extreme bursts of stress or emotional tension can result in her falling into a deep depression, usually only ended by acts of self-harm. Despite her attempts to hide this part of herself, Futaba, Sensei and Molly know about it. She fully understands that this part of her is self-destructive and is aware of how her friends and loved ones will react, so she actively tries to fight these feelings off and keep them hidden as long as possible.

Relationships

Sensei

Unlike most of the class, Rin has no obvious romantic feelings for Sensei and the two have a mostly platonic relationship, formed as Sensei starts to frequent Koi Cafe. Rin cares deeply for Sensei and values his advice and presence, considering him one of the most important people in her life. She often comes to him for advice on her feelings and is comfortable enough to let him see her at her lowest points. After getting together with Otoha, she worries that the two of them have started to drift apart, but Sensei usually dismisses these worries as unfounded.

Some of her feelings and opinions of him depend on the player’s decision to make a move on Chika before or after What's Done is Done, as Sensei promised to let Rin confess first.

  • If he keeps his promise, she sees him as a trustworthy friend, has more interactions with him and is shown to have deeper feelings for him. While she never acts on these, she admits in The Happiest Girl in the World that she might’ve started something with him if he approached her. She affectionately refers to him as her "homie".
  • If he breaks his promise, she makes her disappointment known, reminds him of this every opportunity she can and acts harsh towards him. As of On The Fence, she doesn’t care any more, claiming that her betrayal is worse then his. She’ll still see him as a “homie”.

Futaba

Futaba is Rin's best friend and the two have known each other since Elementary School. At the start of the game, she's the only one who knows about Rin's cycles of depression and is often the one to look after her when they break out. In return, Rin is very attentive to Futaba's troubles, usually noticing changes or issues before anyone else. Their relationship remains strong throughout the game, looking out for each other while also struggling with their problems.

In spite of this, Rin doesn't tell Futaba about Nodoka's exposing book, leading to the first permanent rift between the two of them.

Chika

Rin has had a crush on Chika dating back to their time together in middle school. Despite how approachable and friendly Chika is, Rin struggles to even begin a conversation with her, causing Chika to worry that she might be coming off as unfriendly. Eventually, Rin works up to courage to confess to her, but, knowing that she will be rejected, makes an escape before Chika had the chance to answer. As a result of her broken heart, she slips into another depressive episode, but recovers shortly after when Chika confronts her and properly rejects her feelings. Both promise to remain friends despite this hiccup. While they aren't seen hanging out frequently, they're both members of the Light Music Club and Chika extends her advice after Rin and Otoha begin to fight.

Otoha

Otoha is Rin's second big crush, and later, her first girlfriend. They share a mutual interest in music which sparked an initial friendship between them. Ever since meeting her, Rin's had a crush on Otoha and has obsessed over how to impress her extensively, causing Rin to be extremely jittery and awkward whenever they speak in person. After her confession, Rin manages to calm down, but still shows signs of exaggerated anxiety concerning the future of their relationship. During the second Dorm Wars, the two begin to fight, causing future tension between the two that isn't resolved until Christmas.

The two's relationship becomes stable following this, with both girls deepening their relationship following an overnight stay at a hotel.

Molly

Molly is Rin's friend and a fellow member of the Manga Club. Unbeknownst to Rin, Molly has an enormous crush on Rin and pays extra attention to her after accidentally discovering evidence of her self-harm. Rin remains oblivious to this, even after they share a kiss on Christmas. Her blindness to this fact causes a large amount of tension between the two, especially once Rin begins displaying obvious signs of her crush on Otoha. This culminates into a fight between the two which caused Rin to put their friendship on hold and to keep her distance from her. Following a conversation following Rin's resignation from the manga club, the two slowly return to friends.

Sana

Sana is one of Rin's classmates and sits at the desk next to hers. Despite sharing a mutual interest in video games, the two don't speak at all until Stronger I Become, where Sensei forces Sana into forming a friendship with her. They don't hang out as much as Rin does with Futaba or Sana with Ayane, but Sana considers Rin her second friend.
