Karin Kanda is part of the Side Cast of in Lessons In Love. She is Kirin's older sister and the vice-captain of the soccer team.

Background

Karin is the eldest daughter of two unnamed parents and is Kirin's older sister. The two sisters have grown up in Kumon-Mi presumably their whole lives. Their small age difference means that the two are practically inseparable, sharing hobbies and a group of friends. Unlike her sister, though, Karin exceeds at sports, being among the best in any team she's on while also balancing her studies. Her status as the older sister has motivated her to become a role model for Kirin, picking up a variety of skills such as cooking so she can be someone Kirin looks up to.

Characteristics

Karin is an incredibly sweet and caring girl. She's an excellent team player, continuously puts up with Miku's ridiculous suggestions, and always keeps an eye on her little sister. Kirin's presence has had an incredibly influential effect on Karin's personality, as Karin often pushes herself to learn or practice in pursuit of becoming Kirin's role model. This has also caused Karin to be incredibly hard-working, keeping a consistent workout routine, achieving the status of vice-captain of the soccer team, and later captain of the swimming team, all while maintaining her grades. Her patience does have its limits, though, especially in situations concerning Kirin where she's left without a place to vent.

Behind this sweetness, Karin's shown to be incredibly shy, especially around boys. She struggles to make extended conversation with Sensei at first and flinches every time he compliments her. This nervousness often leads to her being extremely tense about new experiences, getting so caught up in her nerves that she embarrasses herself. She also struggles to keep up with her friend's more energetic and outgoing personalities, being much more reserved and "normal". In addition, despite how easily she makes it seem, she struggles to handle people's expectations of her, being easily overwhelmed and often wishing she could be someone less talented or respected.

Relationships

Sensei

Karin initially struggles to be around Sensei. Her persistent nervousness around boys causes her to freeze or tense up whenever he compliments her, a trait Sensei exploits mercilessly. As they spend more and more time together, though, Karin's able to relax more and more around him, even getting to the point where she can confide in him about her problems and insecurities.

This comfort, combined with Sensei's tendency to flirt constantly, causes her to slowly grow a crush on him, although she hesitates to act on it. The reason behind this hesitation depends somewhat on player choice, but they share a common thread of Karin feeling she's too immature and inexperienced for someone like Sensei.

  • If the player chooses to be honest with Karin during Forty Degrees Below Zero, Karin's hesitance also partly stems from her knowledge of Kirin and Sensei's relationship, wanting to respect the status between them. This, however, doesn't prevent Karin from still finding small ways to hang out with Sensei, even accepting his date invitation during Wrong Places/Wrong Times.

Kirin

Kirin is Karin's little sister. Growing up, the two have always been together, with even Karin's earliest memories involving Kirin in some way. Despite this, Karin feels no resentment or regret about having a sibling, accepting the responsibility of being the oldest. This status is what initially pushed her to be so athletic and active, trying to be a positive role model for her sister.

Unbeknownst to Karin, her effects have backfired, creating a deeply entrenched inferiority complex within Kirin that continuously causes strife between the two. According to Miku in Coach, the two fight often, and Kirin's disinterest in ever apologizing, causes Karin to second-guess their relationship often. Despite this, the two often make up quickly and silently, with Kirin claiming that "it is what it is".

Miku

Miku is one of Karin's friends. Due to the two of them being the captains of the soccer team, they hung out often together during practice, corralling the various girls of the team. Once the two transfer to the swimming club, this friendly relationship continues, although without them sharing executive power. Outside of the club, they aren't shown to hang out much.

Memorable Quotes

  • "'C-C-C-C-C-'"
  • "And in those final weeks, I will realize that it was never about boys or girls...it was about love."
  • "I’m a little less scared...whenever you’re around..."

Trivia

  • Karin herself claims to be a picky eater, claiming she still cuts crusts off sandwiches.
  • Karin loves cats, imagining in one of her daydreams that she ends up alone with ten of them.
  • Karin has a habit of vivid daydreaming, often spiraling into elaborate hypotheticals in the middle of a conversation.
